Overview

Math Trailblazers:
The Math Trailblazers is a program that actively engages students in solving a wide variety of problems.  Based on standards published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, (which were also used to help frame our own state standards), Trailblazers includes a careful balance between concepts and skills.  Many of the activities involve using the scientific method where children learn to develop and apply important mathematical skills and concepts in meaningful ways.  Students find multiple ways to solve problems that provide meaning to pencil and paper procedures.  A lab setting provides an opportunity to connect math and science in real world situations.

We look forward to creating a strong home-school connection.   Parents and teachers are encouraged to integrate homework and classroom activities that support student’s acquisition of basic facts, as well as, thinking skills.  As such, math homework reflects a careful balance between problem solving skills and computational skills.

Impact Mathematics:
The sixth graders at Proctor School use Impact Mathematics:   Algebra and More for the Middle Grades, published by Glencoe, for their math textbook.  This is the same program used at Masconomet in grades seven and eight.  Impact is a comprehensive program including number and operations, proportional reasoning, geometry, probability, and data, with a focus on the development of algebraic thinking.  Impact Mathematics does not confine the algebra strand to one unit of one grade.  Instead, the program takes a developmental approach to algebra.  In three years of Impact Mathematics, students learn the equivalent of a full, first-year algebra course.  Their understanding of the algebra strand – interwoven with and related to their other mathematical strands- evolves over a three-year period, allowing the ideas and skills to develop and become familiar over time.

Parents are responsive to teacher’s efforts to maintain open communication.  Sixth grade teachers at Proctor School communicate expectations, post homework on the web page, and provide on-going support.  All students can have an electronic version of the textbook that can be kept at home.  In that way students do not have to carry the Impact  book back and forth to school each day.  To request a CD or have any further questions answered please see your child’s classroom teacher or go to Impact Math.
