The deer tick transmits Lyme disease after being infected by a woodland animal. The tick takes 24 hours to transmit the disease so quick removal of the tick is essential.
Early symptoms of Lyme disease are:

Chills and fever
Prolonged fatigue
Muscle and joint pain
Bulls-eye rash can (but not always) develop at the site of a tick bite.
