Multiplying Fractions

Follow these steps for multiplying fractions or Mixed Numbers:

Example: 2/3 * 24

 

Step 1: Change the whole number to a fraction.

                         2/3 * 24/1

 

Example: 1/5 * 2  1/2

 

Step 1: Change the mixed number to an improper              fraction.

                          1/5 * 5/2

 

Step 2: Reduce or cross reduce.

            2/3 * 24/1  =  2/1 * 8/1

 

Step 2: Reduce or cross reduce.

            1/5 *  5/2  = 1/1 * 1/2

Step 3: Multiply the numerator and multiply the               denominators.

            2/1 * 8/1 = 16/1

Step 3: Multiply the numerator and multiply the               denominators.

             1/1 * 1/2 =  1/2

 

Step 4: If necessary, convert the answer to
            a mixed number

            16/1 = 16

 

Step 4: If necessary, convert the answer to
            a mixed number

            not necessary

 

Step 5: Put the answer into lowest terms.

            16

 

 

Step 5: Put the answer into lowest terms.

            1/2
