Rocks and Minerals
WebQuest
The Igneous Geology Center is looking for a few
fourth grade geologists to do some investigating. They have heard that you are
studying different types of rocks and minerals. If you can use the Internet to
research rocks and minerals and collect clues, this is a job for you!

TASK
You will work in groups of three
to gather information from the Internet. After you collect your clues, you will meet
with your group to discuss your investigation results. You will create a Hyperstudio
slide show using the information you've found. You will show your slide show to the
other geologists in the class.
What are minerals?
What are the physical characteristics of your assigned mineral?
Where is your assigned mineral found as a natural resource?
How is your assigned mineral used once it is mined from the earth?
What are the three different types of rocks and how are they formed?
What type of rock is your assigned mineral associated with?
Is there a difference between a rock and a mineral?

PROCESS
-You will meet as a group to discuss your clues and
decide which clues should go into the Hyperstudio slide show.
-Remember that when you are reading on the
Internet, you need to keep in mind your goals as a geologist. Try to decide which
information is helpful, and which information you can skim.
-Each of you will create your own slide in Hyperstudio.
You need to check in with your teammates frequently to make sure your information
makes sense and is related to what they are writing.
Check out this rubric before you design your slide show.
You and your team will use a self-assessment rubric at the end of the webquest.
