FROM THE PRINCIPAL, Sarah O'Leary

Thanksgiving is the perfect time of the year to reflect upon why I'm thankful.  I'm thankful for working in a community where education is supported and valued.  I'm thankful for being a member of a reflective staff that has high expectations for ourselves and our students.  I'm thankful that each day I am able to work with an amazing group of children.  Our children are enthusiastic contributors.  This enthusiasm creates a positive school and classroom environment where learning is embraced.  I hope that you all enjoy time with family and friends during this Thanksgiving weekend.

NEWS FROM PROCTOR SPECIALISTS
In the Art Department, students continue to explore patterns, composition and color.  Grade 4 has completed beautiful collage bottles.  Currently they are working on wire tree sculptures which will be combined with poetry.  To get them thinking about the beauty and shapes of trees, they came up with tree sketches which used lines and were inspired by the art of Swiss German artist Paul Klee.  Grade 5 has created fabuous Giant fruit.  The students used paper mache to form and shape the fruit of their choice.  These sculptures included phrases that students cut out of magazines and added to their fruit.  Currently, they are working on a tesselation project, inspired by the art of Dutch artist, Mc Escher.  Students are designing their own stencil to use repeatedly to create their tesselations.  Grade 6 continues to exhibit their artistic talents.  They have completed a wonderful still life of shoes.  Students were encouraged to use two views and the focus was on pattern and composition.  Currently they are working on botanicals.  The medium they are using is oil pastel and the vases will be tooled copper.  The focus in the art program continues to be creativity, choices and problem solving as well as introducing students to new materials, techniques and artists.

In Physical Education at Proctor, we have been very busy finishing up with our annual and very energetic game of "Raiders of the Lost Pumpkin".  The students combined teamwork and cooperation, with skills of throwing, running and dodging, as they successfully retrived the special Halloween pumpkins from the "cave".  Both this week and next, we are working on promoting hockey skills during our "Pillo Polo Hockey" unit.  Over-sized foam sticks are used to maneuver a sponge ball into the opponent's net, as in regular hockey, yet safer.  We usually have two games occuring simultaneously to further increase activity and participation.  The students have been demonstrating great effort and some exciting game play.  Our main goals in PE continue to be promoting overall physical and social skill development, good sportsmanship, a sense of fun and fairness, and a positive regard for others.  The students are encouraged to problem solve, respect one another and to try their best.  We also spend time on issues of safety, benefits of daily exercise, proper nutrition, good hygiene and sickness prevention.

News from Grade 5
Proctor School students, families and staff generously contributed to our annual canned food drive to Our Neighbors' Table in Amesbury. As a school we collected nearly 1,200 food and toiletry items. As Thanksgiving approaches, we are so thankful to our Proctor School community who has given so much to others in need. We know that these economic times are difficult for so many, and what a wonderful life lesson for our children as we help others in such a thoughtful and caring way.

Happy Thanksgiving,
The Fifth Grade Team

MATH OLYMPIAD

On Tuesday, November 17th the Proctor School held its first of five Math Olympiad Contests.  The cafeteria was buzzing with excitement as student after student nervously entered.  By 8:30 there were 89 students anxiously waiting to stretch their problem solving abilities.  The contest was a huge success by many measures.  Proctor has never experienced so many Mathletes at one Contest.  Our Fourth graders performed better than the national average.  Our Fifth grade team produced two students scoring 4 out of 5 questions (a feat only 6 % of the total national Mathletes could do).  The Sixth grade team produced five students scoring 4 out of 5 and one student scoring a perfect 5 out 5, a feat only 1 % of the other Mathletes nationally accomplished.

All students are invited to the lunch sessions, but our teams are at capacity.  Please encourage your students to stick with the program.  Our Fourth graders might be discouraged by their scores, but their accomplishments are great.  They take the same contests as sixth graders, and many score just as well.

There is much to be proud of, but the program needs your help.  I cannot manage the contests alone.  The numbers of Proctor Mathletes are too many for our cafeteria.  I am asking for two or three parents to help me proctor the remaining 4 contests.  If you could be present from 8:30 to 9:30AM on the mornings of December 15th, January 12th, February 9th and March 9th, it would help me tremendously.  Please email me if you are interested or if you have questions about the program.

Thank you for all your support,
