| FROM
THE PRINCIPAL, Sarah
O'Leary |
|
Each spring, students in grades
3-6 participate in the Massachusetts Comprehensive
Assessment System (MCAS). The MCAS measures
where children are in relation to the standards as
stated in the Massachusetts Frameworks. From
March 22 to April 12, children will take the
English-Language Arts (ELA) MCAS. Each
grade level will complete two ELA sessions.
Grade four students will also complete a written
composition during a third session.
From May 10 to May
27, students will take the Mathematics MCAS.
Again, each child will complete two sessions which
measure their knowledge and application of
mathematical skills and concepts. During
that same testing window, fifth grade students
will also take the Science and
Technology/Engineering MCAS. This test also
has two sessions. We are
putting the final touches on the ELA MCAS schedule
and hope to publish the schedule soon. I can
share a few details now. Due to religious
observances, we will not schedule any testing on
Tuesday, March 30 or Friday, April 2.
Students in the fourth grade will complete the
written composition on Tuesday, March 23.
The results of the MCAS are an
important tool that monitor individual, district
and state progress. The results help us to
identify individual student strengths and areas of
improvement, guide our instruction and evaluate
our
curriculum.
