General Guidelines

When saving, it is usually safer to save on the computer's hard drive while working on a project just in case your disk "crashes"!!!  Then when your done, do a "save as" and then save on a disk.

PC

The key idea to saving is to be able to locate the saved document for another time. Therefore it is important to know where you are saving. A PC is set up for most everything to save into the My Documents folder, usually located on the upper left hand corner of the desktop. However,  Inspiration goes to the last folder it was saved in.

It's a good idea to create new folders to help organize your work. You can also create folders on the desktop and save there. This is what we do in the lab.

If your work has been saved on the hard drive (H.D.) and you want to save it on a disk, go to "save as" and change the location of where you are saving. This is located at the top of the save window. The black triangle means there is a drop down menu of places to go. Or you can click on desktop and select 3
1/2 floppy (A) from the drop down menu.  Or you can click on desktop and go to My Computer and double click then go to 3 1/2 floppy (A) and double click on that. The top of the window where it says "save in" will show an icon of the floppy drive and anything that has been saved on the disk will show below. If the file was previously saved on your disk you will need to press "replace".

Macintosh

Depending upon how your Mac is set up, new files will either go into the program you are using or will go into a documents folder. This documents folder might be on the desktop, but if it isn't it can be found by going into the hard drive usually located at the upper right-hand part of the desktop. It is also a good housekeeping rule to create folders to help organize your work.
