Program Introduction

September 2011

CLIC-(Creative Learning Integrated Curriculum) is a privately funded pilot program for the year 2011-2012 at Proctor School run by educator, Jen LaRussa. This program is funded through a grant from the Charles Mott Foundation, the Topsfield Educational Foundation, and through other community, business, and family donations.  Thank you Topsfield community for continuing to invest in CLIC at Proctor School.

What are CLIC classes doing this month?

Please note: Since teachers introduce the curriculum at different times and at different paces, not all classes have come to the CLIC Laboratory, but I hope to see them soon.

4th Grade- Everybody is Somebody's Lunch!  4th grade science-  We are exploring the differences between food chains and food webs which can get very confusing.  In CLIC, children are doing activities to visually explore the differences.  We are constructing food chains with real metal chains learning how energy is transferred from the sun to animals as well explore the many types of food chains.  For food web, the children pick an animal or plant to represent.  Using string we connect who eats who in the group.  The string web gets really crazy connecting the children to each other so it a lesson they will never forget.  We will finish off the unit with a hands on food chain project.

5th Grade- Anatomical Insect Models- 5th grade science-  With their teachers, classes are doing research on insects and then are focusing their investigation on an insect of their choice.  In math, students then learn how to enlarge their insects using graph paper.  Once done, classes are coming to the CLIC Lab to create anatomical models of their insects out of wire and plaster.  The children also have opportunities to look at dead insects under the microscopes in the CLIC lab. We are now in the stage of painting the models and attaching and labeling them on the display stands.

6th Grade- Fibonacci and Number Patterns- 6th grade math-Students are learning about number patterns in math.  In CLIC, students are exploring how math, science, and art come together in the work of Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci. He is famous for his number pattern, Fibonacci Spiral, and Golden Rectangle found in nature, art, architecture, and even in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci.  Students then learn how to mathematically create Fibonacci's spiral based on his 850 year old ratio based number system.

CLIC Before school Program is officially open! Children may come from 8:00-8:45 to the CLIC Lab Monday through Thursday to work on projects.  A permission form must be filled out prior to coming.  Forms are found at www.clicprogram.org or in the envelope on wall outside the CLIC Laboratory.

To look at the CLIC in school and after school calendar, make a donation, or download permission forms go to www.clicprogram.org .
