l. WORD LEVEL

Understand & apply left to right directionality and return sweeps

Use a pattern to predict

Use the picture clues

Match 1:1 (print to speech)

Point under the word

Locate know words and use as anchors

Notice when the pattern changes

Use beginning letters

Look across the whole word

Use chunks and parts of words to decode unfamiliar words

Use known words to figure out unknown words

Use a balance of cues while reading (M, S, and V)

MONITOR FOR MEANING AT ALL TIMES- Does it
    make sense? (word level)

Monitor for language- Does it sound right?

Go back and reread when stuck on a word

Go back and reread when meaning breaks down

Self-correct by cross checking M, S, and V.

Skip a word, read on,  & then go back to figure word based on context

Read high frequency words automatically.

 

FLUENCY

Read fluently with proper phrasing and voice

Read with attention to punctuation



 
COMPREHENSION- PASSAGE LEVEL

MONITOR FOR MEANING- Do I understand this? (passage level)

Stop and think as you read; retell

Make connections- What does this remind you of?

Ask yourself questions as you read?

Make pictures in your mind; visualize what you are reading

Use context clues to figure out meaning of new words

Make inferences as you read- think about what is probably true (through illustrations and text)
